Information on Skilled Worker Immigration Canada

Were you aware that of the thousands who immigrate to Canada each year, a fair share are Skilled Workers (and families). Selected for possessing certain labor skills Canada is lacking, these immigrants are able to create a new life in Canada. Skilled Worker Immigration Canada can fill in vacancies in the labor market that cannot otherwise by filled by Canadian citizens. Skilled Workers can feel good about their ability to contribute to the economy of Canada as well as to its society.

The Point System as explained by a Canadian Immigration Lawyer
Any person looking to enter Canada under the Skilled Worker category must pass a point system assessment. This test is designed to gauge whether or not an applicant will be able to successfully establish roots in Canada. Six factors are tested and a score is assigned to each. Provided the applicant can meet the minimum score of 67 (out of 100 possible points), they will then qualify to enter Canada under Skilled Worker category.

1. Adaptability Potential (10 points)
2. Prearranged Employment (10 points)
3. Age (10 points)
4. Work experience (21 points)
5. Education (25 points)
6. Language Proficiency (English and French) (24 points)

Traditionally, a 2-year (or Associate level) degree from a university, skilled work experience (4 years), being under the age of 50, and possessing high proficiency in French or English language is required to reach the 67 point minimum score. A Canada Immigration Lawyer will point out that in addition to reaching the 67 point passing score, a Skilled Worker applicant should be prepared to meet at least one of these criteria:

Possess a secured offer of employment (1); or

Possess at least one year of work experience (full-time) in one in (or more) high demand professions listed below (1):

(1) Employment Secured
A Skilled Worker applicant who receives an employment offer from a Canadian company in their desired skilled occupation must be willing to take the necessary steps of having that job verified by the Human Resources Department of Canada. Qualification may still be obtained even if the specific job is not listed on report of 38 high demand occupations, but the work experience must be considered skilled based on their work experience. Note: A Canadian Immigration Lawyer will not be able to locate a job for the Skilled Worker applicant. What they can do is help the applicant in filing paperwork and getting the job validated by the Canadian Human Resources Department once one is secured.

(2) List of 29 High Demand Professions
Your Canadian Immigration Lawyer will point out that although the current list, released June 26th 2010, is accurate - it is still subject to change. These changes will be based on future reviews of the labor needs in Canada. If an applicant has one full year of experience (full-time) in an occupation within last 10 years they are able to meet requirements as outlined under Skilled Worker category as long as they have the 67 points needed to pass assessment.
